MARKET INFORMATION
Shipbuilding is a key industry in Vietnam. Including supporting industries, we estimate over 500.000 people are employed.
The country has around 150 shipbuilding and repairing yards. These are owned by Vinashin, Ministry of National Defence, Vinalines, PetroVietnam and foreign companies. Of these figures, 30 shipyards have export capacity. Vessels built in Vietnam include bulk carriers, tankers, offshore vessels, etc. By 2011, foreign orders account for 82% of Vietnam order book.
Thanks to competitive labor cost and favorable geographical location, Vietnam is an attractive destination for maritime supporting industries. A number of Norwegian manufacturers have set up their production facilities in Vietnam such as Rolls-Royce International (Vietnam) Ltd (Odim formerly), Vinomarine, Karmsund Maritime Vietnam Co., Ltd, Maritime Interior, etc.
The Vietnam fleet currently counts 1,636 vessels with total capacity of 7.1 million DWT, ranked about 30th in the world and 4th in the region. Vietnam targets to have a fleet with total capacity of 12 million DWT by 2020.
Vietnam seaport system needs huge investments in the time to come. Vietnam Master plan for seaports development has been approved by Vietnam government in December 2010. Vietnam port system will be developed intensively in order to facilitate 1,000 million tons and 2,600 million tons of cargo by 2020 and 2030 respectively.
