Support for startups in Bulgaria and Romania

Startups may be small companies but they can play a significant role in economic growth. They contribute to economic dynamism by spurring innovation, injecting competition and creating new and exiting jobs. Bilateral partnerships with experienced actors Norway may also be valuable for startups that wish to establish themselves as key players in the economy.

The EEA and Norway Grants supports startups to boost innovation, creativeness and competitiveness. Two calls are currently open with support for startups in Bulgaria and Romania.

The grants also aim to increase cooperation. Bilateral partnerships between Bulgarian or Romanian startups and startups, other enterprises or research intitutes in Norway, Iceland or Liechtenstein are encouraged in both calls.


Bulgaria

In Bulgaria, 2 million euro is available in the call ‘Increased Competitiveness of Bulgarian Enterprises’.

The focus of the projects should be on Green Industry Innovation or Welfare Technology.

Romania

In Romania, 1 million euro is available through the call ‘Boost to Romanian Business sector: Business growth in Start-ups in the areas of Green Industry Innovation, ICT and Blue Growth’.

The focus of the projects should be on Green Industry Innovation, Blue Growth or ICT.

Who can apply?

Romanian micro and small enterprises. The applicants:

  • must have been established and registered for at least 6 months and maximum 4 years of operation at the date of the deadline of the Call;
  • must be operating within one of the focus areas of the programme.
  • shall be unlisted small enterprises up to four years following their registration, which have not yet distributed profits and have not been formed through a merger.

Who can be partner?

The start-ups can apply to the call together with partners.

Eligible partners are any private or public entity, commercial or non-commercial, established as a legal person in Norway. In Romania, any entity from Iceland and Liechtenstein can be partner as well.
