Bulgaria: A new product of 100 % recycled polypropylene and a greener production

"Made to be remade"

Kaskada Ltd. is a company with many years experience in recycling polymer materials, including polypropylene. Their manufacturing process is based on a lot of research in polymer recycling. Kaskada has now developed a new recipe and technology for polypropylene which can be reused as a raw material for the production of big bags. This is a new product which follows the "Made to be Remade" approach - its life cycle continues.

The company is also developing an innovative wastewater treatment system in the production process.

The problem with bags

The use of bulk bags has been increasing noticeably in the past years. It is estimated that about 250 million tons of bags are introduced in use globally every year to store and transport products. The main problems occurring in the recycling of bulk bags and fishery nets and ropes are similar to those encountered in fiber recycling and are characterised by the difficulty in the exact analysis of contaminants.

Kaskalen

The main objective of the project is to extent the production capacity of the recycling operations by up to 15%. This is done by introducing on the market a new green product - "Kaskalen", certified and with registered trade mark. The substance of the new product will be 100% recycled polypropylene (PP) from end of-use bulk bags and fishery nets and ropes that could be use as a material for production of new bulk bags.

The Recycled Polypropylene “Kaskalen” will be a unique and valuable plastic material that will have the following characteristics and will be used as a raw material for the production of bulk bags:

• Resistant to stress and cracking — even when flexed — which makes it suitable for a range of different hinges;
• Doesn’t react with bases, acids, detergents, or water, which means it will not easily degrade;
• A very high melting point, which makes it suitable for a vast range of microwave containers;
• Extremely durable, which allows it to withstand daily wear and tear.

This new project has allowed Kaskada to introduce a new product to the market and to green the production process at the same time.
