Bulgaria: Training on green innovation for SMEs in Bulgaria

Green issues are still new issues for the Bulgarian public and private sector. Innovation Norway provided training for Bulgarian SMEs on business modelling, green innovation and opportunities for project funding through the Green Industry Innovation Programme.  

The training helped increase the capacity and competitiveness of Bulgarian SMEs. It focussed business modelling and green innovation and possibility to further develop project ideas and establish partnerships with relevant Norwegian entities. Awareness of the environmental aspects of production and technology as well as on the added value of green products are importanctto develop sustainable entrepreneurship and business culture.

There were 229 participants representing SMEs from manufacturing and processing sectors, young SMEs and SMEs owned/managed by female entrepreneurs. The training was held by Bulgarian and Norwegian experts on business modelling and start-ups. It was developed by Innovation Norway and consisted of interactive workshops that provided tools and feedback to entrepreneurs. The Center for Entrepreneurship and Executive Development (CEED) coordinated the training on behalf of Innovation Norway.

Green Demo Day

SMEs participating in the training, were invited to develop green project ideas for a competition. The 5-6 of the best project ideas to participate in a Green Demo Day. These companies developed a business plan and participated in a study tour to Norway. They visited Norwegian companies and institutions from relevant sectors to exchange knowledge, experience and good practice. The Bulgarian companies had also the opportunity to discuss future partnership with potential Norwegian partners.

Results of the project

  • 229 participants trained in the six NUTS Regions in Bulgaria
  • Green Demo Day organised and 25 companies presented their business ideas
  • Six companies awarded joining the green Demo Day and the study trip to Norway
