  • Extreme networking

Norwegian startups require international ambitions and networks in order to grow. Innovation Norway has 35 offices in 30 countries that can establish contact with leading networks of startups, incubators and accelerator programs. Innovation Norway Canada is taking it one step further, bringing two experts from Toronto’s vibrant startup community to an extreme networking trip to Norway.

High profile members of the Toronto startup scene will be in Norway from June 13-18th, to present Canadian opportunities for Norwegian startups. These include  Danielle Smith, community engagement lead at Toronto’s largest technology startup incubator Ryerson University’s “DMZ” and Alex Norman, managing director of TechToronto, which is an organization supporting growth and development of the Toronto tech community with monthly gatherings of more than 500 people. This will help build strong links and networks between our respective communities.

Competition put Norwegian startup on the map

Danielle and Alex were selected after having applied through a competition. The link to the competition was retweeted and shared by several important communities in the tech space in Canada such as TechToronto, MaRS and CIX (Canadian Innovation Exchange); firmly putting the Norwegian startup community on the Canadian map.

The world most extreme startup conference

The majority of the journey in Norway will be spent at Startup Extreme and the Startup Extreme Summit, the world’s most extreme startup conferences happening over 3 days in the fjords.  After  a day in Bergen discussing the themes of “Corporate Innovation”, “Startup Scaling” and “Startup Investing” featuring presentations from high profile international investors, media and successful founders, the participants will embark on a 2 day action-packed journey combining extreme sports and networking in spectacular Norwegian nature.  After 2015’s event, tech journalist and seasoned startup event participant Robin Wauters from tech.eu stated “It’s hard to capture in words how amazing this inaugural event was. Even calling it an event seems out of place; ‘experience’ hits much closer to home.”

New ways to build strong ties

After being selected to represent Canada in Norway through this journey, Danielle noted
    - It's an honour to have been chosen to attend Startup Extreme on behalf of the amazing Toronto and wider Canadian startup ecosystem. This is sure to be an unparalleled opportunity to learn from Norway's startup champions, share the incredible things we're building in our community, and discover new ways for us to build stronger ties between leaders and entrepreneurs on both sides. As two countries with such strong foundations in technology and innovation, I can't wait to see what we accomplish from here.

    Strong ambassadors for Norway

Upon their return to Toronto, Danielle and Alex will be strong ambassadors for Norway, and Norwegian companies considering growth in Canada will get support not only from Innovation Norway Canada, but also from these experts in the core of the Torontonian startup scene.

    - We are excited about this opportunity to share the experience of the Norwegian startup scene and thereby connect the startup communities in Canada in Norway. I hope we will see many startups take advantage of these new opportunities and connections says Pål T. Næss, director of Innovation Norway Canada.  The journey is supported by Startup Norway, Innovation Norway Canada and the Canadian Embassy in Oslo.
