Check barn construction costs in your county

In the report below, we present key figures that allow you to compare your barn project with barns in the same county, on farms of a similar size or from different years. This shows how your construction costs compare with the market and helps you assess whether the project can support profitable production.
Dairy barns that have received grants
The figures are based on dairy barns that received grants from us between 2023 and 2025, using the following criteria:
- Investment cost per litre of planned milk quota
- Investment cost per cow place (the number of cubicles, including those in the welfare area and pens for dry and sick cows, indicates the potential capacity of the planned cowshed)
- Investment cost per square metre
Test your project
You can test your project by dividing your investment cost by your planned milk quota, number of cow stalls or number of square metres. Comparing costs will help you assess your project's profitability. If your figures differ significantly from the average in your county or for the planned barn size, there may be good reasons for this, but you should explain them in your application.
Please note: The figures in the section 'Average by barn size' are for Norway as a whole, not just your county, as shown in the table above.
How to use the key figures
The comparison gives you a good indication of how your project measures up against other projects we support, but it does not provide a definitive answer as to whether your project is good or bad. If you run your business well and can demonstrate strong operating results, a weak key figure may still result in acceptable profitability – and vice versa.
If you are planning for spare capacity in the cowshed, it may be just as useful to see what the key figures would look like if you used all the cow spaces for milk production.
