Humanitarian innovation

The Humanitarian Innovation Programme facilitates partnerships between humanitarian organisations and private companies. The aim is to develop innovative solutions that provide better, more effective support to people affected by humanitarian crises.

Armed conflicts, climate change and persistent poverty are creating complex humanitarian crises. These crises are lasting longer and affecting more people than before, while the gap between needs and available resources continues to grow.

The future of humanitarian action depends on new solutions and new ways of working. Through the Humanitarian Innovation Programme, we connect humanitarian needs with expertise and experience from the business sector. The programme is fully funded by the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, administered by us and developed in line with Norway's humanitarian strategy.

Who can apply

Norwegian humanitarian organisations with an international mandate and UN humanitarian agencies can apply for grants. Humanitarian organisations experience first-hand the challenges arising from the crises they address around the world and understand the needs on the ground. The Humanitarian Innovation Programme offers two funding schemes that these organisations can apply for:

  • The Innovation Lab: supports the development of new solutions in partnership with the private sector
  • The Scale-up Programme: supports the adoption and scaling of innovative solutions that have successfully completed pilot testing

How can businesses get involved?

We encourage businesses to contribute their knowledge, experience and expertise to help solve major humanitarian challenges. We create meeting places for humanitarian organisations and businesses, and encourage companies to take part in international market dialogues.
