World-class ultrasound technology

The company began working with us in 2006, based on an idea to use ultrasound technology and artificial intelligence to detect movement, enabling it to function as a sensor in technological devices. Elliptic Labs is a good example of the new generation of companies we work with. Our portfolio of IT companies is growing.
An extensive network
We have supported Elliptic Labs on its journey to where it is today in a number of ways – through funding and expertise, as well as by opening doors to international markets. The company has also taken part in several of our business and market development programmes.
'Taking part in programmes where you can benefit from an extensive network is incredibly valuable. Innovation Norway is certainly a strong partner,' says CEO Laila Danielsen.
Touch-free navigation
Today, Eliptic Labs provides software for smartphones, laptops and IoT devices. Using machine learning, ultrasound and data fusion from other sensors, its software platform can make devices smarter, enabling them to detect movements by people and in their surroundings, subtle hand gestures and even heartbeats. This makes it possible, for example, to navigate screens and devices without touching them.
'We have definitely seen increased interest in touchless navigation during the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as in other health-related features. For example, the technology can be used to monitor people safely in their homes, helping to protect their health and wellbeing without using cameras or microphones that compromise their privacy,' Danielsen explains.
NOK 15 million for restructuring
With Chinese smartphone manufacturer Xiaomi among its largest customers, the company was hit hard when the COVID-19 pandemic led to a complete shutdown in China in early 2020. That was when we stepped in with perhaps our most important contribution to date: a NOK 15 million grant to help the company adapt and enter a new market.
‘The innovation grant enabled us to accelerate our development for the laptop market. We did not have to lay anyone off, and we managed to maintain momentum. We really appreciated that,’ says Danielsen, adding that the company’s future now looks bright.
