A wind farm is a group of wind turbines that generate electricity. Tønsberg-based WindSim provides software for the optimal design and operation of wind farms. The company uses advanced models to simulate wind fields in and around wind farms, enabling turbines to be positioned where they generate the most electricity and are least exposed to unwanted forces. The solution is based on technology that delivers a high degree of accuracy.

Customers in more than 50 countries

The product was launched in 2003 and is well established in the market. The company has customers in more than 50 countries and now employs 19 people. We have supported the company in several areas, providing both funding and advisory services. The company has also participated in the Global Growth export programme.

'WindSim is an exciting company. It offers an innovative, forward-looking product that can help increase renewable energy production and exports,' says Silje Sterner, Senior Adviser at our Vestfold and Telemark office.

Growth in the US

Arne Gravdahl is the founder and Chief Technology Officer of WindSim. He sees strong opportunities for expansion in the years ahead.

'We have seen significant growth in the US, and we expect this to accelerate. We remain focused on onshore wind, but we will expand into offshore wind,' he says.

In early 2022, they will move their software to a cloud-based solution, replacing the current desktop version. The new version will run project comparisons up to 100 times faster in the cloud than on a local computer.

Environmental technology project in China

In 2021, the software developer was one of four Norwegian companies to receive funding from us to develop innovative environmental technology in partnership with organisations in China's Jiangsu region. The funding call supports China's specific targets for reducing its greenhouse gas emissions and its plans to achieve carbon neutrality by 2060. This creates opportunities for companies that provide effective environmental solutions.

Windsim has also taken part in Global Growth Greentech, run by our Beijing office, with the aim of further developing its market potential in China.

'We are grateful for this opportunity, which aligns with our plans in China in terms of both timing and location,' says Gravdahl, adding:

'Our mission is to combat global warming by reducing CO2 emissions. I love nature, and I am proud that we are helping to transform the energy landscape from black to green.'
