Between January 2021 and October 2024, Norwegian organisations secured around NOK 15 billion from Horizon Europe, equivalent to 3.31 per cent of the total budget. This puts Norwegian participants eighth out of 140 countries and ahead of the other Nordic countries, according to the government in a press release.

Our CEO Håkon Haugli believes these results are very encouraging. The widely discussed Mario Draghi report on European competitiveness highlights that research and innovation are essential to addressing Europe’s overarching challenges.

‘Boosting European competitiveness and strengthening European business are currently high on the agenda in Brussels. Draghi points out that Europe needs competitive, technology-driven businesses that accelerate the pace of transition and ensure that more companies commercialise, grow and scale up in Europe,’ says Haugli.

He points out that participating in EU projects provides funding, as well as valuable expertise, networks and access to international markets.

‘We are pleased to see Norwegian companies taking part in EU projects across a wide range of fields. Norwegian companies are performing particularly well in climate, the environment and energy, and several are also involved in biotechnology, the process industry and the space sector. At the same time, we see potential for even more companies to participate in and benefit from these EU programmes,’ says Haugli.

Norwegian research institutes, universities, university colleges, businesses, health trusts and public sector organisations can apply for funding from Horizon Europe, competing with applicants from across Europe, and receive advisory support from the Research Council of Norway and Innovation Norway during the application process.
