The Start-up ecosystem in Kenya May 2018

Nairobi is one of most attractive capitals in Africa where the startup scene is flourishing, others are Cape Town, Accra and Lagos. One of the drivers is the existence of incubator programs; a few offer end-to-end support services in the areas of marketing, strategy, funding, incubation, mentoring and access to networks, while others select a few services. Some of the renowned start up incubators in Nairobi are:   -         Nailab - http://nailab.co.ke/   -         iHub - https://ihub.co.ke/   -         Chandaria Incubation and Innovation Center - http://www.ku.ac.ke/chandaria-biic/    -         Kenya Industrial Research and Development Institute (KIRDI) -  https://www.kirdi.go.ke/index.php/msms-support/business-incubation-services   -         Nest - https://nest.vc/   -         Start Up Africa - http://startupafrica.org/   -         Growth Africa - http://growthafrica.com/   -         MEST – http://meltwater.org/mest-expansion-kenya/   -         LakeHub - http://lakehub.co.ke/ (located in Kisumu)   -         Merck - https://innovationcenter.merckgroup.com/connect/accelerator/african-satellite-programs/nairobi/   -         Pangea Accelerator Program – https://www.pangeaa.com/   Most incubators report a 10% survival rate for startups that have gone through their programs for a minimum of 3 years. They finance their activities mainly through partnerships with private sector as well as donor agencies. Some of the active partners include: GIZ, Amref Kenya, UNFPA, SOS Ke, SOS NL, Good Up Netherlands and Close the Gap Belgium among others.   Other players in the ecosystem provide capital to the startups or bring together investors, some examples are:   -         Savannah VC - http://savannah.vc/   -         Viktoria Ventures - http://www.viktoria.co.ke/   -         Villgro Kenya - http://villgrokenya.or.ke/   -         Sote Hub - http://www.sotehub.com/   -         Start Up Angels - https://startupangels.com/   -         Safaricom Spark Venture Fund - https://www.safaricom.co.ke/spark/   To pilot your solutions in an emerging market with significant growth, the startup ecosystems can speed up the development of your business, however it is advisable to do a research first to ensure that there is a unique need in the market that is yet to be fulfilled or inadequately addressed.   For more information please contact jane.ndungo@innovationnorway.no at Innovation Norway East Africa.
